100 points: White Bones Chardonnay from Catena Zapata

Bodega Catena Zapata is one of Argentina’s finest producers. Highly acclaimed by the critics for its Malbecs, the estate has emerged in recent years as a leading producer of top quality Chardonnay. 2022 White Bones Chardonnay is one of the best ever made. With a perfect 100 points by James Suckling and 98 points by both Wine Advocate and Vinous, it is outstanding value at just £185 per 3 in bond.

White Bones Chardonnay comes from a single 2.2 hectare plot within Adrianna, Catena’s best vineyard. It lies at 1,450m elevation in the stunning Gualtallary sub-region of Mendoza. The high altitude, notable diurnal temperature variation and calcerous soil here make for exceptional cool climate Chardonnay.

The wine is made by a long slow fermentation under the action of indigenous yeasts. It is matured in old oak barrels of 500 litres. White Bones – which refers to the high fossil content in the subsoil – is a cuvee known for its particularly intense aromatics.

This is a fantastic wine that shows just how good Chardonnay from Argentina can be. Complex, finely balanced and extremely long, it is approachable now but will continue to develop with time in bottle. It comes highly recommended.
