2012 Imperial Gran Reserva CVNE: singing with over a decade in magnum

A favourite among our clients at Cuchet&co is CVNE’s Imperial Gran Reserva. Magnums of the 2012 vintage are drinking beautifully right now. With over a decade in bottle, this wine shows deep, complex fruit and an abundance of just-softening, fine-grained tannins. We think this is terrific value for money at just £200 in bond per 3 magnums.

Imperial Gran Reserva is CVNE’s most prestigious wine. It is only made in top years. The grapes come from the company’s best vineyards in Rioja Alta, some of which number among the oldest in Rioja. At harvest, grapes are double-sorted to ensure optimum results: first in the vineyard and then in the winery using an optical sorter. The wine is aged for two years in a mixture of French and American oak before further maturation in bottle.

2012 Imperial Gran Reserva is a classic blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. It comes from a very good vintage in Rioja, rated 4 stars by the Consejor Regulador. The dry conditions of the vintage resulted in particularly ripe, powerful wines.

When it comes to value for money, few fine wines can match Imperial Gran Reserva. This superb vintage of it is delicious now but will continue to develop with another decade (or two) in the cellar.
