2013 Comtes de Champagne from Taittinger

Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 2013 is newly released. It has been highly praised by the critics. Antonio Galloni rates it 98 points on Vinous, noting that it “captures all the pedigree of this great vintage, in its energy, depth and vibrancy”. We have just tasted this wine ourselves, and we were very impressed.

Comtes de Champagne is Taittinger’s top wine. As such, it is only made in the very best years for Chardonnay. 2013 was one of these, with a long slow ripening season lasting into October. This allowed for optimum flavour development in the grapes, resulting in particularly complex fruit.

As always with Comtes de Champagne, all the grapes for the 2013 are from grand crus. They come exclusively from the Cote des Blancs: from the villages of Avize, Cramant, Chouilly, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger. Much of the fruit comes from Taittinger’s own vineyards; the house is the third largest grower in the whole of Champagne. In the winery, just five percentage of the base wines are fermented in oak. This adds a note of complexity but keeps the focus on the fruit. A long maturation of ten years in Taittinger’s cellars enhances the finesse and elegance that are the hallmarks of this cuvee.

Comtes de Champagne is renowned as one of the finest blanc de blancs on the market. The 2013 is a superb iteration: vibrant, intense and mineral, it has plenty of structure to age. This is an excellent buy.
