2014 Vina Bosconia from Lopez de Heredia

2014 is the latest release of Vina Bosconia Rioja Reserva from Bodegas R. Lopez de Heredia. At just over a decade old, it is drinking superbly now but it has a long life ahead of it. Fine, elegant and incredibly complex, this is a fabulous release made in the distinctive style for which the bodega is renowned.

Vina Bosconia comes from a single vineyard site in Rioja Alta. Production here is small: around half that of the bodega’s flagship wine, Vina Tondonia. Like all the wines at Lopez de Heredia, Vina Bosconia is made in a traditional way. The bodega uses only American oak, and the wine is fermented in old vats and and aged in barrels made at the family’s own cooperage.

Maturation is long: Vina Bosconia spends five years in barrel, with two rackings per year to enhance complexity. The 2014 is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 15% Garnacha, with the remainder consisting of Mazuelo and Graciano. Amazingly fresh and vibrant, this is a particularly fine vintage of Bosconia.

Alongside the 2014 Bosconia, we also have a few cases remaining of the bodega’s 2016 Vina Cubillo. Vina Cubillo comes from a different single vineyard in Rioja Alta and it is outstanding in 2016. Both the Wine Advocate and Vinous reckon it is the best vintage of this wine ever made.
