2016 Clos St Denis Jadot: “extremely fine”

2016 Clos St Denis Jadot is a superb wine. Just beginning to drink at ten years old, it comes from a strong vintage for red Burgundy. The critics praise it highly: “extremely fine” says Neal Martin, while Burghound’s Allen Meadows calls it “gorgeously persistent”. The wine offers outstanding value, particularly when compared to other vintages. Value for money in the Cote de Nuits? A rare thing indeed.

Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy’s most reliable houses. Its best wines are excellent. In many of the top appellations, Jadot own their own land, giving them full control over viticulture as well as winemaking. In Clos St Denis, Jadot have a tiny 0.17 hectare plot where the vines are over 90 years old. The fruit here has particular complexity and concentration and the wine is labelled Domaine Gagey to distinguish it from their Maison Louis Jadot bottling made from bought-in grapes.

In 2016, Jadot began harvesting on 27th September. This was much later than at many domaines, allowing the fruit to ripen fully after storms earlier in the month. Winemaker Frederic Barnier de-stemmed almost the entire crop for the reds to create plushness of texture. Jadot’s Clos Saint-Denis was matured as usual in a mixture of new and old oak barrels.

Clos St Denis is our pick of Jadot’s 2016 grand crus. It gets the same rating from Burghound as the house’s Chambertin, yet is on the market for almost half the price. It is also less than half the price of the 2024, the most recent vintage of Jadot’s Clos St Denis – yet it is already ten years old.

This wine is a steal whichever way you look it. It is approachable now but will continue to develop in the cellar for at least another decade. Nuanced, perfumed and beautifully fine, it has a huge amount to offer – both now and in years to come.
