2018 Burgfest contained only one Nuits St Georges worthy of a 5 star rating for Jasper Morris: Clos des Porrets St Georges from Domaine Henri Gouges.
Jasper rates this wine above Gouges’ Les Saint Georges, normally the top cuvee here – and one selling for three times the price in this vintage. Clos des Porrets is a steal in 2018.
Gouges’ Clos des Porrets St Georges is a monopole of the domaine. It comes from a single 3.6 hectare plot situated just beneath Les Perrieres, in the centre of the appellation. The soil is rocky, with pink limestone, and the terroir is known for its wines of longevity and finesse. At Gouges, fermentation takes place in cement tanks, and oak is used sparingly for maturation. The house style of one of firmness and minerality, and the wines increasingly show impressive definition.
Domaine Gouges gets special mention in Jasper’s 2018 Burgfest report as one of the most successful producers in this vintage. The hot, dry conditions of this vintage made for technical challenges at some addresses – but at others, there are ‘potential superstars’. The best 2018 reds – such as this one – have a long future ahead of them.
Clos des Porrets is a great buy from a domaine that excelled in 2018. Buy some now to put in the cellar.
