2021 Meursault Perrieres from Ballot-Millot: Burgfest highlight

Last week Neal Martin published his notes on the latest Burgfest. One of the highlights for him was 2021 Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres from Ballot-Millot. “Fabulous” is how he sums it up, describing it as “beautifully balanced” and “very intense”, with “stunning delineation”.

Burgfest is a tasting like no other. After a few years in bottle, the wines from a single Burgundy vintage are tasted blind, in flights according to appellation. For heterogenous vintages such as 2021, this approach is particularly useful for pinpointing top performers.

In 2021, Meursault was best of the white wine appellations for Neal Martin. The excellent performance of Ballot-Millot’s Perrieres is particularly impressive given the competition: it is considerably cheaper than other top wines of the appellation, such as Lafon’s Perrieres, for example.

Ballot-Millot is a domaine we rate highly. It is run by Charles Ballot, who pays close attention to preserving soil structure in the vineyard. He favours a gentle pressing for the whites, followed by a short settling, before fermentation in barrel using indigenous yeast. Use of new oak is restrained, resulting in expressive, classically-styled wines.

This is a superb wine from an excellent Meursault domaine. It comes highly recommended by us as well as by Neal Martin.
