2024 Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud

2024 Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud is the new release from one of Beaujolais’ top growers. 

Described by Neal Martin as “an exemplary producer”, the domaine shows just how good the wines of Beaujolais can be. Frustrated with pricing in the Cote d’Or? Look to Beaujolais instead. The best wines here have finesse, terroir expression and te capacity to develop with age too. 

Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud is located in the village of Villie-Morgon. The domaine benefits from high density vines, the majority of which were planted using massal selection between 1940 and 1972.
 
Morgon Cote du Py is the flagship wine of the domaine. It comes from eight hectares in this lieu-dit celebrated for its south-facing aspect and decomposed blue rock, giving particular structure and longevity to the wine.

Burgaud also makes a soft, dark-fruited interpretation of Morgon, labelled Ruyere, alongside the long-macerated, distinctively mineral Chollet. Morgon La Roche comes from a parcel of 90 year old vines purchased in 2021. With the 2024 vintage, some of the wine names have been changed due to the reclassification in Morgon. 

Alongside the 2024s is the 2023 Morgon Cote du Py Cuvee James. This is one of the domaine’s top wines and it is released later than the other wines to allow for longer ageing.

Burgaud makes all the wines in a similar way. He rarely de-stems and ferments the grapes using semi-carbonic maceration, resulting in a structured, ageworthy style. He uses no new oak, maturing the wines instead in concrete tanks. 2024 Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud – a difficult year in many parts of France – was a clear success. 

These are fine, nuanced wines from a top-notch domaine in one of France’s most exciting regions. They will not disappoint.
