Camarcanda is the flagship wine at the eponymous Bolgheri estate. Owned by Gaja, the estate numbers among the very finest producers on the Tuscan coast. The latest release is the 2022. It is open and forward with “velvety softness”, as the Wine Advocate‘s Monica Larner puts in; in short, delicious.
The wine comes from the estate’s top sites, where the soils are the stoniest and have high limestone content. First made in 2000, Camarcanda is made in a style which has continued to evolve. The blend initially included other Bordeaux varieties but today only the high acidity Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc are used to ensure freshness. Some whole bunches are now also included in the fermentation for the same reason.
2022 was a year of drought during much of the summer. At Camarcanda, the vines nevertheless adapted well and the wine shows notable elegance. As always here, the two grape varieties were fermented separately in open-topped wooden fermentors. The wine was matured for 18 months in oak followed by a further six months in concrete vessels.
This Super Tuscan comes from one of Italy’s most innovative and forward-thinking producers. It shows finesse and polish but retains the plushness and Italian flavours characteristic of the Bolgheri region.
