Castillo Ygay 2011: “world-class”

Only six vintages of Castillo Ygay’s top wine, the Gran Reserva Especial, have been made in the last twenty years. We recently tasted the 2011 and it was on fabulous form. Deep, complex and seamlessly textured, it has all the hallmarks of a great vintage of this wine.

Castillo Ygay lies in Rioja Alta and dates back to 1852. The grapes for Gran Reserva Especial come from low yielding, 80 year old vines from a single high altitude plot named La Plana. Vinification has always been traditional, with long maturation in a mixture of American and French oak barrels. The Gran Reserva Especial is known for its combination of structure and finesse, and it ages exceptionally well. The blend for the 2011 is 84% Tempranillo, 16% Mazuelo.

2011 was a very warm year in Rioja, giving powerful and concentrated wines with ripe tannins. The Consejo Regulador, Rioja’s official body, rated the vintage “Excellent”, their highest category. At Castillo Ygay, quality was such that the very unusual decision was made to provide another Gran Reserva Especial straight after the 2010.

This is a very good vintage of one of Spain’s finest wines. It is just entering its drinking window but will last for decades. Don’t miss it.
