Ch Tronquoy 2020: new release
Ch Tronquoy excelled in 2020. Tasting blind at the Southwold tasting last year, Vinous’ Neal Martin rated it 95 points, putting it on a par with more famous (and considerably more expensive) wines such as Conseillante, Gruaud Larose and Forts de Latour. Released this morning in Bordeaux for the first time, this superb vintage of Ch Tronquoy offers outstanding value at just £141 in bond per six.
Ch Tronquoy was formerly known as Ch Tronquoy Lalande. Located in St Estephe, it came under the same ownership as giant of the appellation Ch Montrose in 2006. Since then, it has benefitted from the same focus on terroir as its more famous cousin. The opening of a new winery in 2010 with twenty-two different tanks for fermentation has enabled precise matching of vinification to vineyard plot.
Ch Tronquoy is distinctive for a higher percentage of Merlot in the blend than is typical for the appellation. This gives a richness to the wine that is balanced by the freshness imparted by the high gravel content of the terroir here. The 2020 vintage comprises 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Deep and firmly structured with beautiful St Estephe minerality, it will develop over at least two decades in the cellar.
The 2020 is a great vintage for Ch Tronquoy. It is a fantastic wine and it is a steal at this price. Don’t miss it.
