Chateau de Fargues is one of the very best producers of Sauternes. It comes second only to Yquem in the appellation – and a close second, for many commentators.

The wines are offered at a significant discount to en primeur pricing, thanks to the chateau’s desire to bring drinkable vintages to the market. All the vintages have a minimum of 15 years in bottle and are ready to drink.

Ch de Fargues is one of very few remaining Bordeaux chateaux under single family ownership. The Lur Saluces family have owned the property since 1492. A highly significant family in Sauternes, Lur Saluces controlled Ch d’Yquem for several centuries and were instrumental in the creation of the appellation. It was also the Lur Saluces family who pioneered the all-important Sauternes production technique of harvesting in multiple passes through the vineyard.

Today, the chateau continues to harvest in many tries, employing a strict selection procedure to obtain the very best grapes. The wines of De Fargues are distinctive for their very long maturation period. The wines spend 30 months in barrel: twice the current norm for the appellation. This long ageing gives the wines particular depth and complexity. With time in bottle, they show a honeyed richness and intricacy that is unparallelled.
