Cuvee Dr Brendan O’Regan is the top cuvee at Sugrue South Downs, one of the most exciting producers in the UK. It is also the rarest. We are therefore delighted to have secured the last few magnums of the 2016 vintage available at the estate. Described as “the best English wine I have ever tasted” by Jamie Goode, rated 95 points by Vinous and awarded not one but two trophies at WineGB, the 2016 is quite clearly an outstanding wine.
Sugrue is owned and run by Dermot Sugrue, whose experience includes a stint at Ch L’Eglise Clinet as well as running Nyetimber and Wiston. The estate has been highly acclaimed by the critics from the beginning. English wine specialist Oz Clarke calls Sugrue’s wines “the most thrilling, incisive sparklers in England”. Hugh Johnson rates the wines so highly he has recently taken a stake in the business.
Cuvee Dr Brendan O’Regan is a single vineyard wine from the estate’s Jenkyn Place vineyard in Hampshire. It is a blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir. The wine is fermented in stainless steel, giving precision and tension,. The 2016 was aged for five years on the lees. From a low-yielding, particularly concentrated vintage, the 2016 is ready to drink now but will continue develop over the next decade.
Sugrue’s wines have developed a strong following and this 2016 cuvee makes it easy to see why.
