Domaine Ballot-Millot is one of our favourite addresses in Burgundy for classic, age-worthy whites. Based in Meursault, the domaine produces wines which combine the classic weight and texture of the appellation with modern freshness and purity of fruit.
The wines have garnered significant critical acclaim over the last few years. The Wine Advocate’s William Kelley calls them “serious wines… that deserve to be better known”. Jasper Morris declares himself “very impressed by recent offerings from this domaine”.
The domaine comprises just over six hectares and is run today by Charles Ballot, the sixteenth generation of the family here. He favours a gentle pressing for the whites, followed by a short settling, then fermentation in barrel using indigenous yeast. For maturation, use of new oak is restrained: the village wines see 15% new oak, and the premier crus, 25%. The wines are aged for one year in barrel, with a further few months in tank before bottling.
The resulting wines are excellent. Happily, they remain very reasonably priced – although this may change. Domaine Ballot-Millot is a domaine we highly recommend.
