Domaine Faiveley 2023: our first Burgundy 2023 release

Faiveley’s 2023s impressed us a lot. We have tasted the wines twice: first in Burgundy in September and again in London a month later. The wines are open and expressive, with attractive freshness and no shortage of concentration.

2023 was a bountiful year in Burgundy. For quality-minded producers who took measures to control yields – such as Faiveley – it is also one of high calibre. Faiveley took care to thin the crop before veraison, ensuring intensity and concentration in the grapes. A heatwave at the end of the August allowed the domaine to harvest both whites and reds at optimum ripeness levels.

The team at Faiveley seems to make even better wines each year. With a state-of-the-art winery, they are well-equipped to do so. In addition, winemaker Jerome Flous has a wealth of experience to draw on, having now made seventeen vintages here. In 2023, the premier and grand cru reds were vinified in large thermo-regulated oak fermentors for around 20 days. Faiveley used some whole clusters, depending on the appellation. Maturation for both colours is in oak barrels, with a moderate percentage of new oak. The resulting wines combine finesse and structural detail.

This is an excellent vintage from Faiveley. The wines will be approachable early but have plenty of capacity to develop.
