We rate Domaine Henri Magnien highly. So do the critics: William Kelley calls it “an exciting emerging domaine” and Neal Martin says it is “a name to look out for”. The highlight of the range here is Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers. We have the 2018 vintage of this in stock. It is drinking superbly now though it has plenty of structure for further ageing.
Charles Magnien is responsible for the turnaround at the historic domaine of Henri Magnien. The twelfth generation of the family, he began working here in 2009 before taking over completely from his father in 2015. A brand new winery is now operational in Gevrey-Chambertin and the wines show increasing concentration and precision.
The premier cru Les Cazetiers adjoins Clos St Jacques and is one of the best of the Gevrey premier crus. Magnien’s Les Cazetiers comes from a small 1.47 plot which is unique because it encompasses all four soil types found in the appellation. The vineyard is planted with a particular clone, Pinot Magnien, developed by the family and propagated across the domaine by massal selection since 1850. It is prized for its open clusters and small berries, giving particular intensity to the wines.
Les Cazetiers is vinified, like the other wines of the domaine, in stainless steel tanks with a small percentage of whole bunches included. Maturation is in small oak barrels. The result is a concentrated wine with precisely defined fruit and finely delineated tannins.
This is an excellent wine from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most exciting producers. Buy some to drink now or keep.
