Domaine Jean-Marc Bouley: a must-buy grower in Volnay
There are not many must-buy growers in Burgundy at the moment. Jean-Marc Bouley is one of them. The domaine makes outstanding wines from immaculately cultivated vines in Volnay and nearby appellations. The Wine Advocate‘s William Kelley has just reviewed the domaine’s 2023s. He reckons this is the best vintage yet and he rates the wines very highly indeed.
The current incumbent at the domaine is Thomas Bouley. Son of Jean-Marc, he began working at here in the early 2000s and has brought in numerous innovations. He trains the vines high, with little hedging, which has allowed him to achieve full maturity without over-ripeness. He also carefully matches the proportion of whole bunches to plot, vine age and vintage.
In the winery, the grapes undergo a long maceration with temperature control only where necessary. Elevage is long across the range. The resulting wines have elongated, fine tannins and beautifully perfumed aromatics.
The best 2023 red Burgundies offer charm and approachability, alongside excellent concentration. Jean-Marc Bouley’s 2023s are very impressive indeed. Don’t miss them.
