Domaines Leflaive is the Macon outpost of prestigious Puligny-Montrachet estate Domaine Leflaive. The Macon wines are made by the same team as their more famous brethren from further north, and they are just as good as you would expect them to be. Laser-sharp, crystalline and multi-layered, these wines clearly demonstrate the potential for quality in the Maconnais. We think they are a great buy.
Anne-Claude Leflaive set up Domaines Leflaive in 2004. From the start, the vines have been farmed biodynamically. Today, under the management of Brice de la Morandiere and Pierre Vincent, the wines are better than ever. The domaine has bottled several lieux-dits separately since 2017. All the wines are matured for around 18 months in a mixture of oak, concrete and stainless steel vessels.
The estate’s best-known wine is Macon Verze. It comes from several parcels across a 12 hectare holding and it combines well-defined citrus fruit with delicate creaminess. The Macon Verze Les Chenes comes from a 3.4 hectare plot, where clay and limestone soils give additional richness and perfume to the wine.
2022 was an excellent vintage for whites throughout Burgundy. Harvest began at Domaines Leflaive on 25th August, and the 2022 vintage is the first made in the estate’s newly renovated cuverie.
These wines come with a very reasonable price tag when you consider the expertise that goes into making them. They come highly recommended.
