2016 was a classic vintage for red Burgundy in the best of senses. With juicy fruit, lively acidity and pleasingly restrained alcohol, the best wines are very good indeed. Eight years on, the 2016 premier crus are beginning to shine. One of our top picks to drink now is the excellent Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St Jacques from Louis Jadot.
Estournelles St Jacques is a small premier cru of just over two hectares. It lies high on the slope just above Lavaux St Jacques. Previously one of the lesser known of the Gevrey premier crus, it is has become better known in recent years thanks to exponents such as Duroche and Henri Magnien. The white marl soil and high elevation in Estournelles St Jacques combine to give wines known for elegant structure and perfumed aromatics.
Jadot have a small vineyard holding in Estournelles St Jacques. Winemaker Frederic Barnier harvested as late as possible in 2016 to achieve excellent ripeness levels. As always at Jadot, the wine saw long elevage in around 30% new oak.
This is a delicious wine that – yet again – shows just how reliable quality is at Jadot. It is drinking well now but will continue to develop over the next 8-10 years.
