1970 Rioja Gran Reserva Especial Castillo Ygay
There are very few 50 year old wines on the market, and even fewer in tip-top condition. We were therefore very excited to unearth a parcel of 1970 Rioja Gran Reserva Especial Castillo Ygay in the cellars of a European agent. This excellent vintage of Ygay was originally shipped by this agent directly from the bodega, and has been impeccably stored ever since.
In a region not short of historic properties, Castillo Ygay is one of the oldest. Founded in 1852, the bodega is widely regarded as one of the finest producers not just in Rioja, but in the whole of Spain.
The Reserva Especial is the top wine here. It is only made in the very best vintages and was made fewer than twenty times in the last century. The grapes come from old, low yielding vines from a single plot, La Plana, located at high altitude in Rioja Alta. Vinification has alway been traditional, with long ageing in a mixture of American and French oak giving elegance and exceptional ageability to the wine. 1970 is rightly famed as one of Rioja’s best vintages, and Ygay’s Reserva Especial is outstanding.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a 50 year old wine. We think it is very reasonably priced for a wine that is fully mature. Fans of highly complex, beautifully aged Rioja should snap this up.
