One wine stands out for us from Neal Martin’s just-published report on the Southwold tasting of Bordeaux 2020. That wine is Chateau Gloria. Neal Martin rates it 95 points and puts it on a par with some of Bordeaux’s much bigger names: Domaine de Chevalier, Gruaud Larose and Le Pin – the last of which sells for nearly ten times the price. Gloria 2020 is a must-buy at just £150 per six in bond.
Ch Gloria lies in St Julien and is under the same ownership as Ch St Pierre. The property has three separate areas of vines, allowing for a range of terroirs from deep gravel to lighter clay. Investment in a new winery, which became operational in 2016, has led to a jump in quality in recent vintages. Stylistically, the wine is characterised by its plush fruit underpinned by well-delineated structure.
2020 was an excellent vintage in Bordeaux. For Neal Martin, it is a left-bank vintage and he reckons that St Julien offers better value than its neighbour to the north this year.
This is a terrific wine that over-achieves in comparison with its peers. It has the potential to develop fabulously over the coming decades. Don’t miss it.
