Domaine Grivot has ascended in a way that has been quite extraordinary to watch. Over the last decade or so, the domaine has cemented its position as one of the leading domaines in Vosne: an appellation with no shortage of high performers. As Neal Martin puts it, Domaine Grivot has had “a scintillating run of form”, and is now “one of the most coveted producers in the most coveted appellation.”
For Etienne Grivot, the story behind his success has been careful fine-tuning in the vineyards and winery. His children, Mathilde and Hubert, today continue this work. They now run the domaine, with Etienne still very much involved in advisory capacity. The grapes are picked on the later side, to allow for a long slow ripening process. The crop is always entirely de-stemmed before fermentation. The Grivots favour the gentle ‘infusion’ method of extraction with zero punch downs. Maturation is typically in around 30% new oak, using wood from four different tonnelleries.
The resulting wines combine Vosne exuberance with exceptional vibrancy and tension. The Grivots have quite clearly worked out how to get the very best from their enviable vineyard holdings – which encompass some of Burgundy’s most prestigious appellations. Jean Grivot, the founder of the modern estate who sadly passed away recently, must surely have been very proud.
