Bosco is a new cuvee from Stella di Campalto: one of Brunello di Montalcino’s most sought-after producers. It combines several individual terroirs, with no riserva now being produced at the estate. The 2018 Bosco is a resounding success: Vinous‘ Eric Guido describes it an “understated beauty” and Monica Larner calls it her “favourite among these new releases”.
Stella di Campalto has just six hectares under vine in a secluded corner of Montalcino in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, surrounded by forests and olive groves. What makes the estate special is the terroir: the soils here are unusually diverse, ranging from volcanic, to galestro, to clay. Made biodynamically since 2002, the wines stand out for their vibrancy and energy.
Bosco comes from three separate plots which complement each other: Sasso, Lucio and Curva Lata Bosco. Like all the wines of the estate, the wine is made entirely from Sangiovese and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged in large oak barrels before further ageing in bottle. Production is miniscule, with fewer than 600 cases made.
This is a highly distinctive wine with breathtaking perfume and sublime elegance. Those who are looking for the very best in Brunello di Montalcino should not miss it.
