Leeuwin Estate: “One of Australia’s superstars”
Leeuwin Estate has a well-deserved reputation for producing some of Australia’s very best Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon – in a restrained style. The estate is situated in Western Australia’s Margaret River, a region surrounded on three sides by the Indian Ocean, and the maritime influence here makes for a distinctive elegance of fruit.
Leeuwin Estate’s first commercial vintage was in 1979, and the high quality of the wines immediately came to the attention of international wine judges. The Art Series, Leeuwin’s Mouton Rothschild inspired label for its very best wines, has been instrumental in establishing Margaret River as a top-notch source of Chardonnay, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, the variety historically grown here. Leeuwin Estate pioneered the use of a particular Chardonnay clone, known as ‘gin gin’, which thanks to its moderate fruit set gives low yields and high concentration, and has since been adopted by the majority of growers in the region.
The Art Series is the top Chardonnay bottling at Leeuwin, and the grapes come from an unirrigated old vine plot. The latest release comes from the 2019 vintage, an excellent year in Margaret River. The mild spring, warm summer and moderate rainfall shortly before harvest to refresh the vines ensured optimum freshness in the fruit. The wine was made with a blend of whole bunch and crushed fruit, and was barrel fermented in new French barriques before being aged 11 months in these vessels.
The latest release of the Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is the 2018. This was an outstanding year for reds in Margaret River, with warm temperatures through the season followed by a long autumn in which the grapes slowly reached full ripeness. Vinification for the Cabernet Sauvignon is done parcel by parcel, before malolactic fermentation in barrel and maturation for 22 months in 50% new oak.
These releases are superb iterations of some of Australia’s finest wines. What distinguishes them is their restrained fruit coupled with subtle use of oak. They are approachable early, but also age very well, and come highly recommended.
