2006 Sir Winston Churchill is a superb vintage of the top cuvee from Pol Roger. Deep, complex and drinking well now, it has developed brilliantly with almost two decades in bottle. At just £780 per six in bond, it also represents fantastic value for money. When you consider that the latest release, the 2015, is priced at £900 per six, this looks very well priced indeed.
Sir Winston Churchill is of course named after Pol Roger’s most famous fan. It is made in the full-bodied, richly flavoured style that he favoured and it is only produced in the very best of vintages. Pinot Noir predominates in the blend, and the grapes come from grand cru vines dating back to Churchill’s lifetime. The wine is fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel before full malolactic and then maturation in the deepest of Pol Roger’s cellars thirty-three metres below street level.
The 2006 vintage was notable for its unusually dry and sunny summer. After a cool August, September was warm, allowing the grapes to ripen fully. The year produced grapes of particular richness, perfectly suited to the style of Sir Winston Churchill.
Rich and concentrated yet still remarkably fresh, this is an excellent vintage of Sir Winston Churchill. It is fully mature, but will continue to hold. Buy some to enjoy over the next few years.
