We are always on the lookout for wines that over-perform relative to their appellations. Domaine Ferret’s Pouilly Fuisse Clos des Prouges 2020 does exactly that. Tasted blind, this could easily be mistaken for a wine from a far grander appellation further north. It is great value for the wine in the glass.
We visited Domaine Ferret on our latest visit to Burgundy and were very impressed. The critics are similarly enthusiastic: the Wine Advocate‘s William Kelley calls the domaine “one of the finest and most consistent addresses in the Mâconnais”. Furthermore, Jasper Morris notes that it is “unquestionably one of the region’s best addresses”.
We liked Pouilly Fuisse Clos des Prouges 2020 in particular so much that we bought all the stock available. This single vineyard wine comes from a two hectare plot in the centre of the village of Fuisse, where limestone soil gives particular precision to the wine. Fermentation is in oak and the wine spends nine months on the lees to give texture. Maturation is mainly carried out old barrels to retain freshness. As a result, the wine displays richness and breadth combined with notable vibrancy of fruit.
This is a wine we have bought for our own personal collections. Neal Martin suggests that “this could turn into one of J-A Ferret’s best 2020s” and we agree. It is delicious now but has plenty of potential to age for a decade or more in magnum format. It comes highly recommended.
