Sassicaia 2021: the best since 1985

2021 is without doubt an exceptional vintage of Sassicaia. The Wine Advocate gives it a perfect score of 100 points, and Vinous‘ Antonio Galloni reckons it is the best since 1985, calling it “magnificent”. It nevertheless remains remarkably reasonably priced.

Sassicaia is one of Italy’s finest wines, renowned for its elegance and finesse. It is one of the original Super Tuscans, first made in 1968. The story began when Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta experimented with planting Cabernet Sauvignon in coastal Bolgheri instead of the local varieties. These vines immediately thrived on the gravel soils at Tenuta San Guido.

Sassicaia was not released commercially until the 1970s. When it was, it soon attracted a global following – and many imitators, not just in Italy but all over the world. The estate was awarded its own DOC in 1994 in recognition of its unique terroir.

Today, Sassicaia is still made from Cabernet Sauvignon with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. Maturation is in French oak barriques, around a third of which are new.

Sassicaia very much deserves its status as a classic. The superlative 2021 vintage will be extremely long-lived. Buy some now to enjoy over the next few decades.
