The Macon is today the source of some fantastic wines. The very best rival those from more prestigious appellations further north, yet come with a much lower price tag. Domaine Ferret‘s Pouilly Fuisse 1er Cru Tournant de Pouilly 2020 is one of the most impressive we have tasted. Bold and vibrant, it is showing brilliantly now but will continue to develop further over the next few years.
Domaine Ferret is Louis Jadot’s outpost in the Macon. Acquired by Jadot in 2009, the domaine continues to run as a separate entity with access to the expertise of Jadot’s team in Beaune. The Wine Advocate‘s William Kelley calls the domaine “one of the finest and most consistent addresses in the Mâconnais”. Jasper Morris is similarly enthusiastic, naming it “unquestionably one of the region’s best addresses”.
Tournant de Pouilly is one of the domaine’s top cuvées. It comes from a single hectare of vines, spread over two separate plots in the premier cru Les Reisses in the village of Fuisse. Average vine age is around of sixty years. The soil is high in limestone and low in fertility, giving low yields of concentrated grapes.
In the winery, whole bunches are pressed before fermentation in a mixture of stainless steel tanks, concrete eggs and oak barrels. Maturation mainly takes place in old oak to retain freshness, with some lees stirring to give texture. Winemaker Audrey Braccini ensures the wine is moved by gravity wherever possible to allow for maximum fruit expression.
This is a very good wine from an excellent producer. It comes highly recommended.
