2015 Coeur de Cuvee from Vilmart has just arrived in our warehouse. The top wine from one of Champagne’s most admired growers, Coeur de Cuvee is always good, but the 2015 is particularly impressive. It comes from a warm, dry year in which almost all Champagne houses made a vintage wine. Antonio Galloni of Vinous rates the 2015 Coeur de Cuvee 96 points, the highest rating for this wine since the superlative 2002.
Coeur de Cuvee comes from Vilmart‘s oldest vines which are a minimum of 60 years old. As the name suggests, it is made exclusively from the first press: the coeur (or heart) of the cuvee, which has the most vibrant fruit character. The base wine is a blend of 80% Chardonnnay and 20% Pinot Noir and it is fermented and aged for 10 months in oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation is blocked to retain freshness and lees ageing then lasts for over 5 years. The result is a wine that is rich, complex and long, with vibrant, concentrated fruit.
With the 2015, Vilmart‘s Laurent Champs has produced a particularly complex and ageworthy Coeur de Cuvee. It is showing well already but will benefit from further ageing to show its full potential. This wine comes highly recommended.
