Weingut Wittmann 2023s

Weingut Wittmann has emerged as one of Germany’s finest estates for dry Rieslings in recent years.

The estate is in southern Rheinhessen. The majority of the vineyards are in the region of Westhofen but there are also holdings in Nierstein.

Philipp Wittmann runs the estate. Part of a generation of forward-thinking winemakers in the region that includes names such as Klaus-Peter Keller, he has been instrumental in building the reputation of the Rheinhessen in the last decade or so. He converted the estate to biodynamics in 2004 and harvests and vinifies in small lots. The grapes undergo slow fermentations by indigenous yeasts. Maturation is in traditional large casks with a long period of lees ageing.

Most of the wines at Weingut Wittmann are dry Rieslings. The estate makes a series of Erste Lage wines from Westhoften, Gundesheim and Nierstein. Its most sought-after wines are the single vineyard Grosses Gewachs.

The 2023 vintage was a clear success at Wittmann. Vinous‘s Anne Krebiehl describes the 2023s here as “a clean-cut, precise and stonking collection of limestone-dominated Rieslings that charm with vividly aromatic citrus overtones”.
