White Burgundy to drink now: Savigny Les Beaune Les Vergelesses

Festive gatherings whites that are crisp, approachable – and ideally interesting too. One we will be drinking a lot of this year is Savigny Les Beaune Les Vergelesses 2022. Made by the ever-reliable Louis Jadot, it is tense, mineral and concentrated – and excellent value at less than £40 per bottle including VAT.

It comes highly recommended by Burghound‘s Allen Meadows who rated it “outstanding” when he tasted earlier this year.

Les Vergelesses lies high on the slope in the north of Savigny les Beaune. Lofty locations such as this one can be very good for whites. What is more, because the appellation is better known for reds, the wines tend to be excellent value. Jadot own a plot of just under a hectare in Les Vergelesses. Like the other vineyards at Jadot, it is in conversion to organic farming.

2022 was an excellent and extremely consistent vintage for whites, giving ripe, forward wines that are approachable early. At Jadot, freshness was enhanced by stopping the malolactic fermentation earlier than usual. For Les Vergelesses, Jadot use a mixture of larger barrels alongside the classic 228 litre Burgundian barrels to achieve texture without overwhelming the fruit.

This superb wine is a brilliant festive white. It will keep well into next year if you happen to have any left.
