Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud

Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud is one of Beaujolais’ top growers.

“A master” is how Neal Martin has described him on Vinous, praising the wines for their terroir expression, ability to age, and outstanding value for money.

Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud is located in the village of Villie-Morgon. It benefits from high density vines, the majority of which were planted using massal selection between 1940 and 1972.

Jean-Marc Burgaud makes all the wines in a similar way. He rarely de-stems, and ferments the grapes using semi-carbonic maceration, resulting in a structured, ageworthy style. He uses no new oak, maturing the wines instead in concrete tanks.

Morgon Cote du Py is the flagship wine. It comes from eight hectares in this lieu-dit celebrated for its south-facing aspect and decomposed blue rock, giving particular structure and longevity to the wine.

The names of Burgaud’s other wines have been changed from the 2024 vintage due to the reclassification in Morgon. His soft, dark-fruited interpretation of Morgon, previously labelled Les Charmes, is now bottled as Morgon Ruyeres. The distinctively mineral Grand Cras is now called Morgon Chollet. Morgon La Roche, once bottled as Corcelette, comes from a parcel of 90 year old vines purchased in 2021.

A special cuvee of the domaine and one of its top wines is Morgon Cote du Py Cuvee James. This wine is released a year later than the other wines to allow for longer ageing.

These are nuanced wines that develop beautifully with age.
