Gallety

Domaine Gallety is an exciting, up-and-coming domaine in the Southern Rhone. Made from the classic Rhone varieties, the wines are elegant and precise with notable freshness.

The domaine lies in the Côtes du Vivarais. This little-known appellation on the opposite side of the river to Cotes du Rhone was granted AOC status in 1999. The climate here is cooler and wetter than much of the Rhone – which has proved beneficial with climate change. Limestone soils predominate, which also makes the appellation distinctive.

Set up in 1974 by Alain Gallety, Domaine Gallety is run today by Alain and his son David-Alexandre. The grapes are fermented in a gravity fed winery and aged in Burgundian barrels to avoid excessive oak influence.

The range includes several reds, all labelled Cotes du Vivarais. Cuvee Gallety is a blend of equal parts Syrah and Grenache from 40-45 year old vines. Cuvee Emma comes from specific plots and is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. The top two wines comes from the domaine’s oldest vines. La Syrare (30% Grenache and 70% Syrah) spends two years in new oak. La Ligure (60% Grenache and 40% Syrah from exceptionally low yielding vines) is aged even longer, for 3-4 years in oak.

There is also a white, Cotes du Vivarais Blanc, which is a blend of 50% Grenache Blanc, 40% Roussanne and 10% Marsanne. This matures entirely in tank.
