Soldera/Case Basse is an estate with a cult following. It lies within Brunello di Montalcino but wines are sold under IGT Toscana – highly unusually. It is known for its uncompromising focus on quality and tiny quantities. The estate comprises only 10 hectares and estimates suggest that it produces only a quarter of what is possible, even in good years.
The winemaking approach is resolutely traditional. 100% pure Sangiovese has always been used. Grapes are meticulously sorted, and only free-run juice is used, which is highly unusual. The wines are fermented and aged in large Slavonian oak for up to four years.
Legendary winemaker Gianfranco Soldera passed away in 2019. His daughter Monica now runs the estate with her husband Paolo. Both have been involved in the estate for many years and look set to continue in the same vein.
“some of the most compelling and transcendental wines being made anywhere in the world” Antonio Galloni
