Brunello di Montalcino 2019: a spectacular vintage

2019 is a spectacular vintage in Brunello di Montalcino. It is excellent across the board. There are great wines from all parts of the appellation, and while the superstars of the region unsurprisingly excelled, there is also superb value to be found among lesser-known names. This is a vintage you can buy with confidence.

Brunello di Montalcino 2019 has met with widespread critical acclaim. “I’ve never tasted so many drop-dead-gorgeous young Brunellos from a single vintage”, says leading Brunello expert Kerin O’Keefe. She puts it above the superlative 2010 and 2016 vintages, noting that “in 2019, many estates made the best wines they have ever made”. Eric Guido of Vinous rates the 2019 similarly highly, calling it “a vintage of radiance and appeal… the vintage we’ve all been waiting for”.

The success of 2019 is largely a result of a particular set of climatic conditions. 2019 was notable among recent vintages for being warm but – crucially – not too hot. Well-timed rain over summer also helped to refresh the vines, resulting in intensely fragrant, concentrated wines that are superbly balanced. Having seen several years of ageing in accordance with the regulations of the region, they are already approachable on release but they have the structure and density to age. They are, in short, exemplary.
