Jacquesson 738 Degorgement Tardif

The wines in Jacquesson’s numbered 700 series are some of the finest non vintage Champagnes. The late disgorged versions are even better. The 738 Degorgement Tardif, based on the excellent 2010 vintage, is one of the best ever made. It “dazzles from start to finish”, says Antonio Galloni onVinous, rating it 94 points.

The thinking behind Jacquesson’s 700 series is to create the best wine possible each year using one vintage as a base. What makes the wines so good is the quality of the fruit. The majority of the grapes come from Jacquesson’s own organically farmed vineyards in Grande Vallee and Cote des Blancs. Low yields and fermentation in large oak casks give concentration and depth to the wines.

The 738 Degorgement Tardif spent an incredible eight years on the lees, imparting notable complexity of flavour and a fine, delicate mousse. As always with the Degorgement Tardif wines, it was bottled with lower dosage than the standard 738. With just 0.75 grams per litre dosage, it remains superbly balanced: a testament to the richness and concentration of the wine.

There are few Champagnes you can buy for this price that offer this level of depth and finesse.  It is delicious now but will hold for five years or more. Don’t miss it.
