Pierre Girardin is a name to watch. He owns land in some of Burgundy’s very finest terroirs, and despite only having made wine since 2017, he has already attracted a loyal following. Allen Meadows of Burghound calls Pierre Girardin “a clear talent”and describes the wines as “understated and pure”.
Pierre grew up helping his father at Domaine Vincent Girardin. When Vincent left Burgundy in a surprise move in 2011, he sold off much of his land but kept the very best plots for his son. Pierre began working this land in 2017, and now also buys in a small volume of carefully sourced grapes.
Pierre farms organically and trains his vines high, to balance the canopy with the fruit load. In the cellar, the emphasis is on elegance and expression. Pierre uses custom-made barrels of 456L from Francois Freres to obtain structure and texture with minimal effect on aromatics. He avoids lees-stirring for the whites to keep tension and precision in the wines.
The latest releases are the 2022s: a vintage of vibrancy and balance at Pierre Girardin, as elsewhere in Burgundy. Those interested should snap them up. Such is the excitement around these wines that they disappear rapidly from the market.
This is a superb set of wines from a rising star in Burgundy. They come highly recommended.
