Uccelliera: “next-level Rosso di Montalcino”

The very best examples of Rosso di Montalcino can be fantastic value for money. At Brunello estates who take Rosso seriously, these wines have much of the fragrance and silky texture of their more exalted counterparts  – for a fraction of the price.

Uccellieras terrific 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is a case in point. Described as “spellbinding” by Vinous‘s Eric Guido and rated an astounding 93 points, this superlative Rosso offers superb value.

Uccelliera is a small ten-hectare estate located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the south-east of Montalcino. Highly unusually, the vines vary considerably in altitude: 150m for those at the bottom to 350m at the top. Aspect and soils are similarly varied. This diverse set up gives winemaker Andrea Cortonesi a broad palette to work with and makes for particular complexity in the wines.

The Rosso di Montalcino at Uccelliera comes from younger vines within the Brunello appellation as well as from vines designated as Rosso. The grapes are hand-picked and fermented using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then matured in a mixture of French and Slavonian oak. The resulting wine is vibrant and beautifully perfumed, with long, silky tannins.

This wine shows just how good Rosso di Montalcino can be. If you are looking for top-notch Rosso to drink over the next few years, this is a great buy.
