Fontodi is the producer of Flaccianello, a highly regarded Super Tuscan from a benchmark producer of Chianti.
Flaccianello is notable among the Super Tuscans for being made entirely from Sangiovese. It was first produced in 1981 at Fontodi, and originally fell outside of the DOC regulations because other indigenous varieties were not included in the blend. The wine continues to be labelled as IGT today, and it is perhaps most typically “Tuscan” of the Super Tuscans.
Flaccianello always comes from the best vineyard plots at Fontodi. After a two-week fermentation, the majority of the wine is matured for 18 months in French oak, of which around 40% is new. A small proportion is aged in amphorae to add additional texture and freshness to the blend. The result is a deeply concentrated wine, with fine-grained tannins and considerable ageing potential.
