Giacomo Conterno

Region

Piedmont, Italy

Giacomo Conterno is a legendary Barolo estate. It is renowned for its long aged, traditionally styled Barolos.

The most famous wines made here are Cascina Francia and Monfortino Riserva. Cascina Francia comes from a monopole of the same name in Serralunga d’Alba. Monfortino is only made in top vintages and is aged a minimum of seven years in large oak. Monfortino is widely regarded as the top wine of the entire Barolo region – and indeed as one of the world’s finest wines.

The Giacomo Conterno estate is run today by the third generation of the family, Roberto Conterno. He has in recent years added to the estate’s holdings. In 2008, he purchased 6 hectares, including 3 hectares in Cerretta. In 2015 he added a further 9 hectares adjoining the original plot in Cascina Francia in Arione.

Conterno also took a controlling stake in Nervi in 2018. This is a small estate in Gattinara, which lies to the north of Barolo in Alto Piedmont. The unusual complexity of the soils and the particular version of Nebbiolo grown here togethert make for highly distinctive wines. These are now bottled under the label Nervi-Conterno.
