Lopez de Heredia

Lopez de Heredia is the most traditional of all Rioja producers.

The bodega was established in 1877 and the Lopez de Heredia family continue to run the winery in much the same way today. The wines are always fermented in old vats and are aged for long periods in barrels made at the family’s own cooperage. No new French oak is used, and the wines are frequently racked during maturation to enhance complexity.

Lopez de Heredia use only fruit from their own vineyards, which is unusual in Rioja. They have 170 hectares under vine. There are three vineyards for red wine, which produce Vina Bosconia, Vina Tondonia, and Vina Cubillo.  The vineyards are planted with Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. The whites are labelled as Vina Gravonia, and are made from Viura and Malvasia.

The wines are renowned for their distinctive style: fine, elegant and highly complex.
